1. BURLEIGH PRO, BURLEIGH HEADLAND
25 – 28 January
Head to Burleigh Hill to see some of the world’s best surfers carve it up with the locals at the second Qualifying Series event for the World Surf League competitions, the 2018 Flight Centre Burleigh Pro.
2. FIREWORKS AND FOOD TRUCK FEAST, BROADWATER PARKLANDS
In case drool-worthy food trucks and fireworks to rival New Year’s weren’t enough, epic entertainment has been thrown for good measure. Get set for live music from The Twine, Sunset City and Cheap Fakes; a kids adventure play zone, and; an incredible performance on the water combining jetpacks, flyboards and jetskis along the Broadwater Parklands.
3. SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB
Head to the Waterscape pontoon for an Aussie BBQ at Southport Yacht Club. Listen to the water lapping on the rocks along the marina, then rock out to live entertainment from midday.
4. GOLD COAST HINTERLAND MUSEUM INC.
Head to the hills for the Gold Coast Hinterland Heritage Museum’s family friendly celebrations in Mudgeeraba. Flag raising will be conducted by the Albert Battery at 11:30am with entertainment by the Hinterland Community Band and Devonshire Tea to follow.
5. BEACH CRICKET
It’s time to release the classic flipper- and we’re not talking dolphins, though you may see a couple of those too. Beach cricket is an all-time favourite on Australia Day and here on the Gold Coast we are spoilt for choice when it comes to long, sandy cricket pitches. Head down to Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Coolangatta or The Spit and make Warnie proud. Esky wickets optional.
6. WATCH AN AUSTRALIA DAY SUNRISE
The early bird gets the patriotic worm, so set your alarm to ‘stun’ and wake up super early to catch the sunrise on the beach this Australia Day. Great vantage points for viewing an Aussie-day-sunrise include Greenmount, Burleigh Heads and Kirra Lookout. Pack a brekkie picnic and grab a freshly brewed coffee closeby.
7. AUSTRALIA DAY BBQ
With around 380 public barbecues located in the parks and reserves on the Gold Coast, grab your friends and family, some snags and head out for a day in the great outdoors. You'll find top-notch spots at Broadbeach and Miami as well as Southport and Burleigh Heads. You can find some great BBQ locations here.
8. BURLEIGH SWIM RUN
Burleigh beach will be alive with colour and action with the Slater + Gordon Burleigh Swim Run Australia Day Challenge. Open to everyone from age five to over 60, the event raises funds and awareness for Save Lives Donate Organs.
9. MO’S DESERT CLUBHOUSE, BURLEIGH
Kick back with the local creative souls of the southern Gold Coast and head to Mo’s Desert Clubhouse from 2pm. A ticketed event combining local acts and craft beer will be held in a converted warehouse for all you cool cats out there with all profits going to a local charity.
10. GOLD COAST’S BIGGEST WATER FIGHT
Take part in the Gold Coast’s Biggest Water Fight and plenty of family activities at The Club at Parkwood Village. Fuel up with an Aussie BBQ, buckets of prawns and chilled beers, then fill up your own water pistol and let the games begin.
11. OZFEST BLOCK PARTY 2018
The annual OzFest at Miami Shark Bar is on the day after Australia Day for extended Aussie celebrations. Let loose with your favourite punk and indie acts on the indoor stage and shake it to hip hop collective One Day up on the rooftop carpark. Fair shake of the sauce bottle.
12. SEASIDE SOUNDS
Make the most of the Sunday’s surrounding our national day. Head to Kirra foreshore for Seaside Sounds on January 21 and 28, and February 4, 11 and 18 for live music from 4pm – 7pm.
13. SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB’s and RSL’s
Keep your ear out for Australia Day Celebrations fit for the whole family at the many perfectly positioned Gold Coast Surf Life Saving Clubs and RSL’s this year. You’ll find yourself surrounded with cold drinks, raffles galore and live music as the evening kicks off.
