There’s no better place to date than the Gold Coast. Whether you’re wooing someone new, taking online dating for a test run or trying to keep the romance alive, here is a guide to some of the best date ideas on the Gold Coast (tip: save the link so you always have ideas on hand).
1. Q1 SKYPOINT
Stunning views accrue extra brownie points when it comes to dating, so take your date to Q1 SkyPoint Observation Deck. Keep things chilled and enjoy the 360-degree views over a bite to eat and cocktails from Seventy7 Cafe & Bar, or go on an open-air adventure and take on the SkyPoint Climb, rewarding yourselves with a cocktail afterwards! Plus, it’s the closest you’ll get to shout your love from the rooftops.
2. BOND UNIVERSITY
School is out and it’s time to fish. Head to Robina and find Bond University for a master class in easy fishing. This location seems a bit odd. We were sceptical as well but once you go there yourself and see the silver flashes of big fish constantly feeding near the tidal gates you’ll enrol in the Uni just so you can fish here more often. They do degrees in baiting a hook, right?
One thing to note here is that Bond University is private property but the good news is the bridge that crosses the lake is on public land. Access it from Lake Orr Drive and thank us later. Fishing in this urban environment makes you feel like you have a PhD in awesome fishing spots. No boat needed.
3. WANDER THROUGH A WINERY
Vineyards always hold a certain romance and while most people think of the beach when they picture the Gold Coast, there are also a handful of beautiful wineries that are worth a visit. Head to Cedar Creek Estate, Canungra Valley Vineyards, Witches Falls Winery or Mount Nathan Winery to name a few, or pack a picnic lunch, play rock, paper scissors to see who is designated driver and organise your own cellar door tour.
4. LET’S DANCE
Take a cue from classic movies like Grease, Dirty Dancing and Strictly Ballroom (you’ll notice, the guy always gets the girl) and step out of your comfort zone, literally, by attending a dance class. Gold Coast Salsa Tumbao Latino Dance & Entertainment hold classes each Wednesday night at Varsity Lakes Tavern while Gold Coast City Council offer a variety of dance classes through the Active & Healthy Lifestyle program.
5. SONGBIRDS RAINFOREST RETREAT
Leave the coastline behind and head to Mt Tamborine, home to lush rainforests, spectacular mountain ranges, ancient landforms and Songbirds Rainforest Retreat. Set on 51 acres of lush rainforest, Songbirds Restaurant is headed up by renowned chef Meyjitte Boughtenout, creating an innovative dining experience. There are two and three-course a la carte options or choose from their six and eight-course tasting menu with matching wines, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know each other over your meal.
6. GO GLAMPING
Picture yourself relaxing by the creek, telling stories by the campfire and slowly waking to sounds of the country around you. Camping isn’t for everyone, but Glamping, a combination of glamour and camping, can be! Take the stress out of your break and let Glamping Days Hire Co take care of all the details for you – they’ll do the planning and setting up (and pack down), all you need to do is pack a bag.
7. FOOD TOUR
These multi-stop foodie tours with Gold Coast Food and Wine Tours hit four or more carefully curated restaurants in Burleigh Heads and Broadbeach, showcasing fresh new and local cuisine. You’ll meet the chefs, owners and people behind the scene in each venue and taste some amazing dishes. Think of it as a moveable feast that’s as entertaining as it is delicious.
8. SPICE THINGS UP IN THE KITCHEN
Whether you consider yourself a MasterChef or a kitchen kamikaze, your cooking game can always use some refining so hone your skills and get messy together at a cooking class. The Wild Lime Cooking School, in the Lost World Valley, hold public classes once a month. Make a night of it and book a stay in the picturesque Worendo Cottages.
9. PLAY A ROUND
No matter how old you are, a visit to King Tutts in Surfers Paradise or Putt Putt Golf Mermaid Beach for a game of mini golf is always going to be a good time. And the best news – they’re open until late so you can play a round before or after you dine.
Steam up your windows with your date at the only drive-in movie theatre left on the Gold Coast, Yatala Drive-In Theatre. If it’s a warm night, pack a picnic rug so you can spread out under the stars, otherwise fill the car with blankets and pillows. There’s even a 50s-style American diner where you can grab a hotdog and choc top, or fill a picnic basket with delicious snacks and drinks.
11. GO ON A ROADTRIP
Although not the case, the Gold Coast’s hinterland’s subtropical rainforests seem far removed from the glitz and glamour of Surfers Paradise. Create an awesome playlist of songs you both love (and can sing along to) and escape to the heart of the hinterland for a drive through scenic forests, cliffs, gorges and waterfalls. Stop along the way for coffees, baked goods, roadside fruit and vegetable stands, wine tasting and anything else that takes your fancy.
12. WATCH THE SUNRISE
With over 50 kilometres of coastline, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to romantic spots to watch the sunrise over the Pacific. Our picks for the best spots for #coupleselfies are the jetty at Southport Spit, Broadbeach, Burleigh, Nobby’s Beach and Currumbin. Grab some fresh juices and acai bowls and enjoy the fresh salty air and sound of crashing waves. Plus the early morning ocean breeze will give you a great excuse to snuggle closer.
13. VISIT HOTA
The Home of the Arts or HOTA offers up a veritable feast of options with everything from comedy shows to concerts, live theatre to the latest movies, which means you’re bound to find something to tickle both your fancies. Plus The Arts Cafe is the perfect venue to have a meal, coffee or glass of wine before a film or performance.
14. HOT AIR BALLOONING
Take your love to new heights and float like a cloud as you witness the sunrise climbing over the unforgettable panorama of the Gold Coast skyline. Check out Hot Air or Scenic Day Tours for hot air balloon flights over the Gold Coast.
15. FORAGE FOR FOOD AT MIAMI MARKETTA
Miami Marketta is the perfect place to take a date, since you’re definitely going to want to eat everything, and you’ll be able to judge exactly how adventurous that maybe-special someone is based on what they go for. Plus there’s a dessert hall, licensed bar and regular live music.
16. PLAN A PICNIC
There are few things quite as romantic (or as easy to organise) as a picnic; all you need is some sunshine, a picnic blanket and a few snacks. Keep it simple with the weekend papers, a couple of croissants and a picnic blanket; or fill a bag with a breadboard, knife, cheese, crackers, prosciutto, dip, two glasses and a bottle of wine or even a couple of ciders. To get away from the hustle and bustle, head to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard where you can buy a gourmet picnic basket which includes wine and a big rug so you can sit by the creek behind the property.
17. HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO
Everyone loves to get their just desserts so seduce your significant other with a decadent dessert for two. Think souffle French toast, chocolate brownies or even a simple bowl of ice cream. If you’re nervous enough without adding cooking into the mix, surprise them with a trip to Messina Gelato in Coolangatta, Oh My, Waffle in Burleigh Heads, or pick up some giant lamingtons from the Reid Street Kitchen at Southport.
18. PUT ROMANCE ON THE MENU
If you’re looking for somewhere special to take your special someone for dinner, there are a number of great Gold Coast restaurants where romance is on the menu and you’re guaranteed a date to remember. Our favourites include Four Winds 360 Restaurant, Rick Shores, The Fish House or Vanitas Restaurant at Versace, just to name a few.
19. GO ON A MINI BREAK
These are more staycations than vacations, but you won’t care when you’re having drinks by the pool. And while you could totally do dinner at the amazing onsite restaurants, it’s going to be a lot more memorable (and enjoyable) if you instead stay in and order room service. Our picks include the Sheraton Mirage Resort and Spa, QT Gold Coast, and Peppers Ruffles Lodge and Spa.
20. DO AN ESCAPE ROOM
As you solve puzzles and decode clues to escape within a certain time limit, you very well might get frustrated and be subjected to the worst of each other, so at least you know there’s nowhere to go but up! Escape Hunt Gold Coast offers a range of scenarios for two or more players so why not get friends together for a fun group date?
21. SWEAT TOGETHER
According to science or research or someone sporty, people who work out together feel more chemistry towards one another thanks to the release of sweat-induced endorphins. Thankfully, the Gold Coast is home to some of the most spectacular bushwalks in the country and the crisp, clear Winter/Spring weather is the perfect time to start exploring. Check out the best hikes and walks on the coast here.
22. BOWL THEM OVER
Ten-pin bowling is always a great date idea because you can talk while you play, have a drink and engage in a bit of cheeky competition. Head to Strike Bowling Bar to bowl over your date with a couple of friendly games in their glow in the dark lanes before heading out to Vapiano, Hurricane’s or Surfers Paradise newcomer, Hyde Paradiso. In for a late night? Treat yourselves and the kids and book in for a short (or long) stay at the stunning Dorchester On The Beach.
23. GO WHALE WATCHING
Each year, humpback whales undertake their annual migration from Antarctica to babymoon along the coast. As well as seeing these majestic creates up close, you can feel the wind in your hair, salty air in your lungs and recreate the king of the world’ scene from Titanic. Don’t forget to take a camera to catch the whales and those windswept couple shots! Click here to see a list of the Coast’s best whale watching locations and operators.
24. JUMP ONBOARD
What better way to put some spark in a new or existing relationship than to have a laugh and bond over a great outdoor experience. We’re talking none other than the attraction of all attractions, Aquaduck Safaris. Exploring the stunning Northern Gold Coast waterways in a fun, light-hearted hour adventure, it’s a river city cruise with a difference.
25. GO GONDOLAS
Last but certainly not least, our pick for a Gold Coast date to remember has to be with our friends at Gold Coast Gondolas. Gliding through the waterways from Main Beach, enjoy a romantic evening aboard your very own luxury Gondola (and Gondolier) whilst enjoying your main course. They even have proposal packages for those ready to pop the question.
