BEST GOLD COAST SPOTS FOR LITTLE BEACH BUMS

It is no secret the Gold Coast is a supreme spot to get salty, with over 52 kilometres of sugary sand to choose from. But for little beach goers, there are some spots sweeter than others to get their beach on. From the calm, clear waters of our estuaries and creeks, to our pretty sheltered bays, whether you have a first time wader in tow or a wannabe wave rider, the Gold Coast is beach bum bliss – here are some of our personal favourite spots to get those cheeks dusted.

TALLEBUDGERA CREEK

Tally Creek (Tallebudgera Creek if you pop it in the sat nav). This little piece of paradise is all crystalline waters, shallow sandy banks and water temperatures that are more bath than brrrr. Either side of the creek is pretty perfect, but for an extra lookout from local lifesavers, the south side is patrolled and therefore preferred for little swimmers. There is a playground adjacent to Neptunes Cafe (little sister of famed Bam Bam Bakehouse), and plenty of pandanus shade along the shore to pop a pram, park a picnic blanket or sling a hammock.

CURRUMBIN ALLEY

Another calm creek with shimmering turquoise-tinged waters perfect for a SUP or a dip – or as my little likes to do, chase the poor seagulls across the shallows – is Currumbin Alley. The surf is perfect for beginners with a number of surf schools offering a guaranteed stand up first lesson. If you have more advanced kids in tow, Currumbin off the rocks is one of the most popular surf spots for aspiring grommets to master. But even if you are not a surfer, flat rock is a great spot to sit and watch the pros at play or take some wanderlust snaps on sunrise or sunset with your salty crew as the foreground and the city skyline and the backdrop.

KIRRA

Lagoon-like waters that are crystal clear make this a perfect spot for little’s to linger. With rocks to climb, rock pools to scour and little waves to boogey on down to, Kirra is considered one of the Gold Coast best beaches for families. Kirra always seems to have the clearest, bluest water on the coast and therefore is a perfect spot to take underwater pics of the kids ducking under waves, swimming like mermaids or mermen, or if you have a go-pro on hand with a dome, those awesome half under, half above shots that will take your holiday snaps to the next level. Another plus (well for my kids anyway) – is an all you can eat Pizza Hut on the shore, which always goes down a treat after working up an appetite out on those waves.

 RAINBOW BAY

The name alone conjures magic, but it also a great protected spot for little’s to frolic on a protected stretch of sand. Rainbow often sports a rather fanciful lagoon, perfect for little beach bebes and their yummy mummies who prefer a float over dodging waves. Around the two points that book-end the Gold Coast’s southern-most beach, you will find large rock pools that double as private wading pools and a giant green frog painted on the rocks, but get in early, as these are some of the most prized spots on the coast to score.

Happy beach adventuring and remember – slip, slop, slap and smile!
