GET READY, GET SET, AND SLOW – A NON-RUNNER’S GUIDE TO THE GOLD COAST MARATHON

GET READY, GET SET, AND SLOW – A NON-RUNNER’S GUIDE TO THE GOLD COAST MARATHON

27 Jun 2018

Sporting fever is again kicking into overdrive on the Gold Coast, with 25,000 athletes taking to the streets for the 40th Gold Coast Marathon from 30 June – 1 July. While we all love to get behind this impressive spectacle of athleticism, we get it; running isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. So if you prefer your sport as a spectator on the sidelines, here’s how you can get amongst the Gold Coast Marathon action without needing to break a sweat.

 FUEL UP

One of the best things about not being a professional athlete is not having to eat like one! So do away with the calorie count and perch yourself at one of our many popular beachside cafes that provide a stellar view across the racecourse. From Paradise Point to Main Beach and across Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Mermaid, Nobby’s, Miami and Burleigh; indulge in a killer cuppa’ and epic breakfast spread in the sunshine as competitors dash past. A few of our favourites include our beloved surf clubs – Mermaid Beach and Surfers Paradise in particular are positioned right on the track; while Piccolo’s, Borough Barista and Café on Hedges also line the coastal course, so you won’t even have to leave your seat to catch the action.  For those who are inspired to keep the nutritional balance in check – we also have our fair share of healthy eateries serving up fresh, gluten / dairy / sugar free, high-protein, low-carb dishes that actually taste good. BSKT is our pick, and is conveniently located curb-side at Nobby’s Beach.

DRESS TO IMPRESS IN (NON) ACTIVE WEAR

We know that looking good is – in our eyes – as important as the big race itself, so if your marathon preparation is taking on a slightly different approach and involves shopping and spending money, we can relate. Active-wear is the local uniform ‘round here, so if you’re a visitor to our coastal city as a Marathon spectator, hotfoot it to one of our world-class shopping centres like Pacific Fair and kit yourself out in a new athletic wardrobe. Even if you’re not competing, you’ll certainly look the part and that counts for something!

GET ACTIVE

If you’re partial to pounding the pavement but cramp up at the thought of tackling the ambitious 49 kilometre course (Not. Even. Joking.), there are a few other options to consider when registering. Round up your squad and get involved in the Fun Run on Saturday 30th June – coming in at a much more acceptable 5.7 kilometres.  Youngsters can also get in on the action, with a two, and four-kilometre Junior Dash taking place on Saturday.

The Marathon is the perfect opportunity to leave the car at home and soak up the sideline atmosphere on two-wheels. You can Peddle your way around the course for free for the first 24 hours with Gold Coast City Council’s Mobike initiative. Ting, ting.
