Keep It Fresh: Where To Get Your Gold Coast Produce

09 Feb 2022

Fancy yourself a bit of a foodie with a penchant for fresh produce? You've come to the right place. The Gold Coast is now known as a gastronomic destination with growers, producers, providores and culinary connoisseurs serving up all sorts of delicious delicacies. So whether you're after the freshest local ocean catch, certified organic fruit and veg picked straight from the orchard, or gourmet goods for your grazing platter, we're dishing up the top spots to find fresh Gold Coast produce.

TROPICAL FRUIT WORLD

Now that road trips across the border are back on the cards, why not make your way south to Tropical Fruit World for a fresh food market haul with a difference. Spread across acres of verdant hinterland, this working farm and orchard is sure to be a family crowd pleaser with tractor rides, farm animals and fruit tastings all on offer (for a fee). Graze the Plantation Market – open every day from 10am – and load up a box with fruit and veg picked straight from the farm, or visit on a Saturday to experience the new, larger-format market day, where seafood, pet products and boutique spirits are also on offer. Inside you’ll find a quaint cafe, local honey, sweet treats and household items to purchase.

FARMERS MARKETS

If there’s one thing the Gold Coast food scene has embraced wholeheartedly, it’s the ritual of the weekly farmers market haul. With small-scale and expansive markets dotted all over the Coast every weekend, there’s endless opportunity to browse, sample, taste, admire and shop everything from fresh produce to baked goods, artisan bread, fresh flowers, specialty coffee, homewares and wholefoods. If you’re on the southern end of the Coast, try Palm Beach Farmers Market or the Burleigh Farmers Market every Saturday from 6am – 11.30am and 7am respectively. On the northern end there are also options aplenty, with the popular Marina Mirage Farmers Market taking place every Saturday from 6.30am, or the HOTA Farmers & Artisan Market at Home of the Arts (HOTA) drawing a crowd every Sunday from 6am. For a mid-week treat or fridge restock, try the Currumbin Community Markets every Thursday from 7am. And in good news for fans of the Organic Gold Coast Farmers Market, the beloved Sunday market is returning to Miami State High School early this year after a brief hiatus.

MIAMI FISH MARKET

If the weekend crowds are anything to go by, the Gold Coast’s newest boutique fishmonger, Miami Fish Market, is the hottest place in town for fresh seafood with the most incredible display of responsibly sourced delights straight from the sea. Paul Gloftis (you may recognise the surname; the family are well-established foodies here on the Gold Coast) has created a culinary space that feels more like a contemporary eatery than a takeaway seafood shop. And to be honest, it is so much more than that – pull up a stool and tuck into freshly shucked Pacific’s drizzled with their signature vinaigrette and masterfully sliced sashimi from the oyster and sashimi bar; peruse the cabinets brimming with local delicacies and daily specials; and grab a few gourmet goods to accompany your seafood spread. Open daily.

FOSTERS BAKERY

Get your carb-fix with a pit stop at one of the most iconic bakeries on the Gold Coast, Fosters – tucked in the heart of beachside Nobby’s. This old-school, family-run bake shop gives off all the nostalgic vibes of seaside holiday, and it’s the perfect place to fill hungry bellies pre or post-swim. From freshly baked loaves and croissants, to custard strawberry tarts, loaded salad rolls and every type of pie you could dream of. Don’t be surprised if it immediately becomes your fave.

QUINCE FROMAGERIE

If your platter game is strong, and you appreciate the perfect cheese/wine pairing, you simply must add Quince Fromagerie to your foodie hit list. Nestled within one of the southern Gold Coast’s most popular retail and dining precincts – Cornerstone Stores – this charming one-of-a-kind cheesemonger and cellar is stocked with mouthwatering European cheese varieties, ranging from the creamy to the sharp, plus a beautifully curated collection of pantry and platter supplies (caviar, anyone?). While you’re there, peruse boutique local and international wines, small batch spirits and gourmet hampers and elevate your next picnic. Open daily.

FREEMAN’S ORGANIC FARM

There’s likely not many locals who haven’t visited this hinterland gem – Freeman’s Organic Farm is an iconic organic farmers market in Currumbin Valley that dates back to 1915 when banana farmer Arthur Freeman created this sprawling plantation (which soon became Australia’s largest commercial banana farm). Now, this beloved family operation continues to attract visitors from all over to sample and purchase seasonal organic produce straight from the fields. Load up your basket with award-winning bananas, custard apples, avocados and paw-paw (plus so much more), sip on freshly brewed organic coffee and soak in the hinterland vistas, or chat to Farmer David about what’s in season.

HARRIS FARM

Next time you’re planning a grocery run, consider mixing things up with a visit to the brand-new Harris Farm on Isle of Capri’s Via Roma – it will seriously blow your mind (and probably your shopping list too). Unlike anything we’ve seen here before, this gourmet supermarket-meets-bakery-meets-butcher-meets-florist is changing the way we stock our fridges, pantries and homes. Load up your trolley with farm-fresh produce, cold-pressed juices, seasonal blooms, antipasti, and freshly baked pastries and crusty sourdough from the team at Bread Social. There’s also an eye-popping line up of gourmet, ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook meals, perfect for those wanting a grab-and-go lunch or an easy family dinner – think home-made soups and cooking sauces, pizzas made entirely from up-cycled ingredients, curries, salads and sashimi. There’s even a milk station where you can bottle your own take-home batch. Open every day from 6am – 10pm

GROUND GROCER

Head west and you’ll quickly discover why the Gold Coast’s food bowl is having a moment; between roadside produce stalls and plantations, you’ll find Ground Grocer, tucked inside Currumbin Valley’s Ecovillage. This certified organic market has become a favourite among foodies wanting to replenish their health and homes with the freshest, locally-grown produce, coffee and artisan products. Located on a grassy patch next to Pasture & Co, there’s plenty of room for the kids to run and spot the local kangaroo residents while you shop. All produce is chemical free and picked on the day it’s sold, and you can stock up on freshly baked sourdough varieties, kombucha, wholefood products and household staples too. The grocer is open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Where: 6 Village Way, Currumbin Valley

Now you’re in the know about where to go for the Gold Coast’s freshest produce, you’re all set for a gastronomical tour of our growers, famers, fishing trawlers, bakers and more.
