Pixels and Palm Trees – Samuel Tupou Artist Talk
Brisbane-based artist Samuel Tupou will be in residence at HOTA Gallery with an open studio from Monday 29 May, concluding with an Artist Talk on Sunday 4 June where you can join us in the HOTA Gallery Studio to learn more about Samuel’s art practice.
Using the medium of screen printing, Samuel creates artworks in response to his Tongan and Polynesian heritage, incorporating patterns derived from and inspired by tapa (bark cloth) design and fine mat weaving. Samuel combines traditional Pasifika culture motifs with the stylised images and wildly artificial colours of western pop culture to inform his art practice in modern and unexpected ways.
His recent works draw inspiration from mathematical geometry and 80s video game imagery.
