Top 10 ways to spend Australia Day 2017

Marnie O'Brien

The countdown is on until Australia Day 2017, and the question on everybody’s lips is, “What should we do?!”

To plan your festivities for 26 January, check out this guide of the best things to do on the Gold Coast this Australia Day.

1. Flight Centre Burleigh Pro

The Flight Centre Burleigh Pro kicks off on Australia Day this year and runs until 29 January. What better way to spend Australia Day by the beach, than grabbing a spot on Burleigh Hill and watching some of the world’s best surfers go head to head in the World Surf League Qualifying Series?

2. Food, fireworks and fun

Gold Coast Australia Day will be held from 4-8pm at Broadwater Parklands, Southport and even feature a fireworks display!

Head over for an epic celebration including 20 all-nations food trucks; sports activities with The Gold Coast Suns, The Gold Coast Titans and Queensland Cricket; and live performances throughout the evening.

3. Australia Day BBQ

Throwing a few snags on the barbie by the beach or in a nice park setting is a classic way to celebrate Australia Day amongst family and friends. 4. Live Music at Hard Rock Cafe

If you don't want to cook yourself, head over for a BBQ and live music on The Deck at Hard Rock Cafe Surfers Paradise. From 2-5pm you can enjoy the best Australian covers by Andy Penney Music while having some drinks and BBQ on our deck! Aussie Hot Dog for $10 only!

5. Australia Day at Southport Yacht Club

Celebrate Australia Day in true Aussie style on the water at Southport Yacht Club. There's live entertainment from 12-4pm and there will be great Aussie raffles and Best Dressed Prizes.

6. Get nostalgic at a local RSL

The team at Currumbin RSL are putting on the festivities this year with some Aussie favourites including totem tennis, lamingtons and Pavlova, bush tucker, and live entertainment by Nigel Jones.

7. Ozfest at Miami Tavern

With a dress code of boardies, thongs and bikinis the annual OZFEST held at the Miami Tavern is an excellent venue to celebrate Australia Day on the Gold Coast. The festival features great live music and loads of fun to be had.

8. Beach cricket

Who cares if it's cliché - beach cricket is widely popular on Australia Day for good reason - this sandy sport is so much fun with a group of mates or family. And with the myriad of gorgeous beaches on the Gold Coast, you can have a couple of innings and wrap it up with a refreshing dip in the ocean.

9. Barefoot bowls

If cricket isn't your thing, you could always have a roll up at any one of the coast’s many bowls clubs. Enjoy some sunshine, cheap drinks and friendly competition this ‘Straya Day’. Read more about barefoot bowls on the Gold Coast here.

10. Oz Day Float Party

What’s a float party you ask? Picture blow-up unicorns, over-sized floating fruit, inflatable rafts and the likes all drifting along the east side of Currumbin Creek Bridge. From personal experience, I suggest you get pumping early for the gigantic inflatables - it takes far longer than you think - but it will be oh-so worth it when you’re kickin’ back and floating the day away.

Whatever you decide to do this Australia Day, it’s bound to be a scorcher. So pack the sunscreen, drink plenty of water and above all, enjoy yourself!
