Gold Coast’s best spots for ice cream lovers

Metropolist

If there's one thing Gold Coasters are obsessed with (aside from coffee, brekky dates, and burgers) it's euphoric treats of the frozen variety.

We're talking ice cream and gelato - cold, sweet, delicious goodness. This summer, we challenge you to lick your way through each of the best ice creams on the Gold Coast.

Scoop Gelati, Burleigh Heads

Despite its size, this James Street gelato shop punches above its weight when it comes to keeping punters happy. Family-owned and operated, the gelato and sorbet are handmade with love using local ingredients where possible. We're digging the creativity here with flavours such as strawberry, mint, and lime; strawberry and caramelised balsamic; pink pitaya with coconut; or liquorice for the wicked. Love your work, Scoop Gelati!

Sweet Bliss Donuts, Helensvale

Sure their name may be spruiking treats of the holed and deep-fried variety, but let's be honest, the star attraction of the show here is Sweet Bliss Donuts diet-ditching ice cream sandwiches. Popping up every Friday and Saturday night at NightQuarter night markets, once you've tried one of their Insta-worthy ice cream sandwiches, you'll think you've died and been resurrected to dessert heaven. While southerners may be impatiently awaiting the arrival of Mister Fitz, for northerners, this home-grown market stall is winning over plenty of hearts (and waist lines).

Gelato Messina, Coolangatta

Gelato Messina is the undisputed king of the dessert kingdom. Having served nightly hordes in Sydney for over a decade, they recently started spreading their magic across the country, last year opening their first Queensland store in The Strand at Coolangatta. For ice cream enthusiasts it's worth a trip to the south alone, to taste what it takes to be crowned crème-de-la-crème. All made in-house with love, go weak at the knees for over 40 exotically indulgent flavours. Try their number one seller - salted caramel with white chocolate chip, or other crafty concoctions like pear and rhubarb, salted coconut and mango salsa, or our favourite: apple pie.

The Gelato Shop, Broadbeach

Unquestionably serving some of the best ice cream on the Gold Coast, you'll be a confused kid in a candy shop trying to decide at The Gelato Shop in Broadbeach. Let us tempt you - will you choose chocolate fudge brownie, liquorice, caramelised fig and mascarpone, jam doughnut, banoffi pie, crunchy lemon cheesecake, rocky road, sticky date pudding, or peanut butter cup? Or just grab a triple scoop and throw the rest into a one-litre takeaway container. We have no will power either.

Lavezzi, Robina

A recent addition to the best ice cream on the Gold Coast, Lavezzi's impressive new ice creamy can be found at The Kitchens, Robina Town Centre. With origins from the gelato holy land, AKA Italy, Lavezzi has been honing their craft for well over a century, so we guess you can say, they know their stuff! Flavours worth tracking down include a zesty blood orange sorbet, or dairy classics like butterscotch, honeycomb, and salted caramel. And if the gelato isn't luring enough, just wait 'till you see their epic semifreddo cakes.

CocoWhip, Robina

Continuing its path to health food supremacy, CocoWhip has recently launched a stand-alone store in The Kitchens plus a roving van named Whips & Co. Squeal! The world's first vegan and bio-fermented coconut soft serve, CocoWhip was introduced by our very own wholefoods crusaders at Mermaid Beach's BSKT. Wrap your lips around the guilt-free frozen goodness of their five flavour staples: original coconut, Minty Matcha, Cacao Bliss, Super Berry, and African Mango and Turmeric. Vegans, those with food intolerances, and health-conscious foodies - your prayers have been answered!

Cowch Dessert Bar, Broadbeach

They had us at dessert bar. Then they threw cocktails into the mix, and the deal was done. You know Pacific Fair's quirky dessert store is loco for all things dairy when they've got cow udders for light fixtures! If you can steal your gaze away from the insane selection of desserts (think: sweet pizzas, churros, and Belgian waffles) then you'll wanna try your skills with Cowch's signature Naked Pops. Design your own ice cream on a stick, dressing your personal creation in a chocolate coating and adorning with edible decorations. We need to go on a diet just thinking about it.

Quench, Southport

While wandering around Ferry Road Markets, get your summer dessert fill at Quench. Praised for serving up some of the northern Gold Coast’s best ice cream and gelato, you can't go wrong with any of the home-made flavours scooped out of their tempting display cabinet.

Gelateria Dolce Follia, Burleigh Heads

With summer temps soaring, peel yourself away from the beach and cool down with a visit to this hole-in-the-wall fixture in Burleigh Heads. Creating some of the best ice cream on the Gold Coast, all it takes is a mouthful of their award-winning finger lime sorbet to understand why folks flock here. Other tried-and-true flavours of creamy delight include Kit Kat, honeycomb choc crunch, and cacao. Hot tip: go a double scoop of gooey salted caramel Nutella cheesecake, topped with strawberries and cream. So good!
