What to do on Australia Day 2016

Phoebe Lee | Travel Blogger

The start of 2016 brings with it the countdown to one of our favourite days of the year, Australia Day. It's a chance to get around in your finest Aussie-inspired garb, plaster yourself in temporary tattoos and spend a day with your family, friends and a cold drink or two. To help you plan your Australia Day festivities this year, we've put together this guide of the best things to do on the Gold Coast this Australia Day.

Evandale Parklands Australia Day Celebrations

You’ll find yourself spoiled for choice at the massive Evandale Parklands Australia Day Celebrations. As well as great food you’ll find a whole host of fun entertainment to make your Australia Day a memorable one. Events include comedy, pig racing, a snake show, animal nursery, damper making and the Flairs Freestyle Show featuring BMX and freestyle Moto-X riders. There are a also a whole swag of other fun things planned for the day, so be sure to check it out.

Beach Cricket

It’s not really Australia Day on the Gold Coast if you don’t have at least one game of beach cricket. Luckily, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to gorgeous beaches to spend a day at. Try heading down to Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Coolangatta or The Spit to set up your wickets and get bowling. You get bonus points for packing a radio and listening to the Triple J Hottest 100 while you play.

Australia Day Party Pub Crawl

For a memorable Australia Day, sign yourself up for the Australia Day Party Pub Crawl with Wicked Club Crawl. The day includes a 2 1/2 hour Party Cruise, VIP entry to clubs, a visit to 4 venues on the Gold Coast and a whole range of fun prizes and more. Just be sure to dress up in your best Aussie-inspired get-up!

OZFEST at the Miami Tavern

With a dress code of boardies, thongs and bikinis the annual OZFEST held at the Miami Tavern is definitely the place to celebrate this Australia Day on the Gold Coast. The festival features great live music from hip hop artist Seth Sentry, indie pop group San Cisco, Art vs Science and Saskwatch. There’ll be plenty of cold beer, great music and loads of fun to be had!

Watch an Australia Day sunrise

The early bird gets the patriotic worm, so set your alarm to ‘stun’ and wake up super early to catch the sunrise on the beach this Australia Day. Great vantage points for viewing an Aussie-day-sunrise include Greenmount, Burleigh Heads and Kirra Lookout. You may even like to grab a coffee and pack yourself a breakfast picnic with freshly baked goodies to take with you.

Celebrations at a local RSL

Where better to celebrate Australia Day than one of our great local RSLs? The team at Currumbin RSL are putting on the festivities this year, as are the Surfers Paradise RSL. You’ll find yourself surrounded with cold drinks, raffles galore and live music as the evening kicks off.

Australia Day BBQ

The city of Gold Coast has some 380 public barbecues located in the parks and reserves on the Gold Coast. Grab your friends and family, some delicious food and head out for a day in the great outdoors. You'll find great spots at Broadbeach and Miami as well as Southport and Burleigh Heads. You can find some great BBQ locations here.

North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club

You’ll find Australia Day Celebrations fit for the whole family at the North Burleigh SLSC this year. They’ll be hosting a fantastic BBQ at the Ed Hardy Park inclusive of great food stalls and entertainment for the kids, including a jumping castle and face painting.
