The cute little sister of Bam Bam Bakehouse, Custard Canteen is located just steps from Tallebudgera Creek's turquoise blue waters. With fresh Portuguese tarts always baking in the oven, resistance futile after one delicious whiff, but add self-saucing, gooey centred cookies, brownies that come in chocolate or blonde, and be sure to try the flaky as you-know-what sausage rolls served with spicy tomato relish.

Tasty Tip: Consciously couple a bakery trip with a bask and dip in one of the coast's favourite swimming spots nearby at Tallebudgera Creek. Kids and dogs are welcome with plenty of space for them to play. Open from 6.30am - 2.30pm every day.

4. Fuel Bakehouse - Currumbin

Instead of bread, baker Ben Edwards wanted to craft the best trilogy of pies, doughnuts and coffee, and as his cult local following attests - he’s smashed it out of the park at Fuel Bakehouse. Think seven hours of slow-cooked beef to fill deep-pie dishes, salted caramel, Nutella or jam semi-sourdough doughnuts (they sell out so be quick), plus exceptional coffee from local roaster Burleigh Heads Social Espresso.

As an added bonus, Fuel recently opened a little hole in the wall in James St, Burleigh Heads, where you can get scrumptious baked goods and quality coffee to grab and go.

Tasty Tip: Eat in or takeaway - Currumbin Creek and Burleigh Point are nearby Fuel's two locatoins, providing the perfect place to picnic. Open Mon - Fri 4:30am - 4pm. Sat & Sun 5am - 2pm with kids welcome.

5. The Bread Social - Currumbin

Founded in Byron Bay, The Bread Social created a fierce following of hungry locals and soon spread north to the Gold Coast. What a win for us! There’s a store in Tweed and now a new Bread Social has popped up in Currumbin - follow the smell of delectable baked goods and you’ll find it.

From a counter stuffed with crispy pork sausage rolls, lemon myrtle meringues, Portuguese custard tarts, Danish pastries and seventy-two-hour sourdough, you’ll understand why this bakery is always busy. Tasty tip: Their coffee is spectacular too. Stock up on sweet treats and pies, and drive down Currumbin Valley Rd for a picnic at the Currumbin Rock Pools. Open Tues - Fri 6am - 4pm. The milkshakes are worth a share too - inspired by lamingtons, cookies and doughnuts, and speaking of the latter be sure to try (or take home) a creme brûlée doughnut! Tasty Tip: Wear your elastic waist pants, or opt for a take-home box to share. Kids are welcome and dogs are also if kept on a lead. Open 6am - 3pm every day.
Location: 20 Hibiscus Haven, Miami

7. Fosters Bakery - Nobby Beach

If youve noticed the tradie trucks and at least 10-person deep line up at Nobby Beach every day - youve found Fosters. Not as fancy as others, but this honest, humble bakery founded in 1950, punches way above its weight with incredible pies (some even say the best in Queensland), pasties, sausage rolls and the old-school cakes and slices you fondly recall from your childhood.

Think creamy custard tarts, man-hand-sized lamingtons, plump vanilla slices, apple and rhubarb pies, glossy strawberry tarts and the kind of bread you cant help but sneak in a few slices on the way home in the car. Tasty tip: the Lamb and rosemary pie is legendary and fight off the tradies to claim a Ned Kelly - filled with chunky steak, bacon, cheese plus a whole egg. Open Mon-Fri 5:30am - 4pm. Sat & Sun 5:30am - 3pm.

Tarte is one of the coast’s most popular places to feast on tasty tartines, galettes loaded with savoury and sweets, crusty croissants, loaded baguettes, divine tarts and even cookie cups shaped like shots and filled with warm milk for decadent deliciousness.

There are two gorgeous Gold Coast locations to choose from. Soak up Paris-style street vibes mixed with a stylish side of Soho in Burleigh, or visit the newest location on the banks of beautiful Currumbin Creek, where you can enjoy a lovely lunch or breakfast, overlooking the water. Here, there’s a restaurant with a slightly more refined lunch menu accompanied by an extensive wine list, or a more casual cafe section adjoining, where you can stroll in with sandy feet and order a coffee and pastry to go.

Tasty Tip: Hire a stand up paddle board next door at the Boat Shed and enjoy a paddle on Currumbin Creek before breakfast to work up an appetite.Cafe opens 6.30am - 3pm, restaurant opens 7.30am - 3pm weekdays (closes 5pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Image: Tourism Events Queensland.
