4 Best Beaches For Kids on the Gold Coast

14 Apr 2023

A family holiday to the Gold Coast means beach time! With 52 kilometers of golden sand and sparkling water to choose from, you could probably use a few pointers. From the calm, clear waters of our estuaries and creeks, to sandy shores and sheltered bays, here are some of the Gold Coast’s best kid-friendly beaches.

KIRRA

With rocks to climb, rock pools to scour and lagoon-like, crystal-clear waters, Kirra is a perfect spot for kids to swim and splash. The waves are generally smaller and gentler here and Kirra is one of the safest stretches of beach on the southern Gold Coast. Stop for morning tea at one of the coastal cafes or head to one of the numerous surf clubs in this area for family-friendly dining with ocean views.

TALLEBUDGERA CREEK

This little piece of paradise is all crystalline waters, shallow sandy banks and tranquility. Tallebudgera Creek is the swimming spot dreams are made of, and its protected waters mean parents don’t need to worry about rips or waves. Either side of the creek is pretty perfect, but the south side is patrolled by lifesavers and therefore preferred for little swimmers. There is a playground adjacent to Neptune's Cafe and Custard Canteen is a stone’s throw away when coffee and morning tea is required. There’s plenty of pandanus shade along the shore to pop a pram, park a picnic blanket or sling a hammock.

CURRUMBIN ALLEY

Currumbin Alley is where the creek meets the sea, with shimmering turquoise-tinged waters perfect for a SUP or a dip. Swim in the calm lagoon, or head to the beach side for a wave. The protected, shallow break makes the ideal training ground for beginner surfers - you can hire boards or sign up for lessons at the local surf school trucks in the car park. Otherwise, simply pop up your Cool Cabana, break out the beach toys and have a lovely time paddling, splashing, building sandcastles and getting a good dose of Vitamin Sea.

RAINBOW BAY

The name alone conjures magic, but it’s also a great protected spot for little ones to frolic on a protected stretch of sand. A little lagoon often forms on the beach at Rainbow Bay, creating a paradise for toddlers to paddle about in. Around the two points that book-end the Gold Coast’s southern-most beach, you’ll discover large rock pools that double as private wading pools. You’ll also have an incredible view of the coastline stretching north all the way to Surfers Paradise skyline. Rainbow Bay is an epic spot to watch the sunset - BYO fish ‘n’ chips for the perfect end to your family beach day.

Happy  adventuring! Head to these kid-friendly swimming spots and your family beach days will become cherished memories of sunshine, salt and smiley kids.
