Clear your calendar – there’s a bit on! Autumn heralds holiday time on the Gold Coast, and as the milder temperatures roll in, so too do a plethora of world class events. Our beautiful beaches make the ideal spot for spectators as surf life savers from around Australia gather for the national titles. Or you could head to iconic Snapper Rocks to watch some of the world’s best surfers battle it out to qualify for the world tour. We’ve got everything from a Lego Exhibtion at HOTA to an international boat show at Sanctuary Cove, plus a festival celebrating surf culture and a new street food experience at Dreamworld. Take your pick from any of these excellent events and you’ll get to see Gold Coast at it’s best.
When: 1- 8 May, 2022 Where: The Oceanway between Kirra and Point Danger
Come along to this first-time festival celebrating the creativity that underpins our popular surf culture here on the Gold Coast, with an inspired mash up of film, photography, workshops and conversation rolling over eight days. In the sublime natural oceanside amphitheatre stretching from Kirra to Point Danger on the southern Gold Coast, pop-up film installations, photography meet ups and exhibitions plus movie screenings and more will reel. Premium events will be ticketed, but will include a unique ‘Ticket Per Day Per Stay’ option offered as an incentive to overnight guests who opt to stay in designated local postcodes surrounding the event. Free events include self-guided photo tours weaving through iconic surf images and curated surfing short films on show, beside a showcase of over 30 high caliber artists’ works that offer visitors an insight into the powerful intersect shared by art and surfing.
When: 7 – 15 May, 2022 Where: Snapper Rocks
As the first stop for the WSL (World Surfing League) qualifying series, Snapper Rocks’ famous break will play host to 96 men and 64 women battling for a spot on the 2023 WSL Championship Tour. Surfers will be drawn from seven WSL Regional Qualifying Series around the world, and the series is considered a vital stepping stone event to advance to the elite world tour. The competition will be fierce, with the world’s best surfers duelling it out on waves pumping from the famed righthand point, plus wildcard entrants eager to stake their claim. Formerly known as the Billabong Pro and later the Quicksilver Pro, the event has carved an annual place at Snapper Rocks for over 20 years. Get in early to get a front row seat, and pack your beach umbrella, sunscreen and swimmers to be part of the high energy vibe.
SANCTUARY COVE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW
When: 19-22 May, 2022 Where: Sanctuary Cove
As the southern hemisphere’s premier boating event, join the sea of over 50,000 visitors who flock to admire, try and buy from a gleaming fleet of over 600 boats at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May. Combining a prestigious waterfront address and largest on-water display of boats ranging from humble dinghies to luxurious super yachts, peruse over 300 exhibits spanning 25,0000 sqm where a plethora of nautical-inspired gadgets, technology and products have been designed to float your boat. Socialising is as much a part of the vibe as the fleet, with VIP soirees, live entertainment, fishing demonstrations, a dedicated kids zone, bars, food, fashion and festivity all part of the biggest boating and lifestyle show afloat.
BRICKTIONARY: Interactive LEGO® Exhibition
When: 9 April – 7 August, 2022 Where: Home of the Arts (HOTA)
Round up the kids to visit the interactive exhibition by legendary LEGO® master Ryan ‘Brickman’ McNaught. Kids can get hands-on during a 30-90 minute journey that leads them through a fantasy land filled with over 150 models from Brickman’s latest book Bricktionary, alongside works they know and love from LEGO® Masters Australia. There are also 45 never-seen-before creations fresh from the brilliant minds of the Brickman team. Over 1 million LEGO® bricks will encourage kids to let their creativity run wild at this world premiere exhibition, which includes six interactive build zones designed to challenge and inspire young builders to dream big and create more.

Watch as the best Australian lifesavers from over 300 clubs battle it on the sand and in the sea in a quest to be crowned Australian Club Champions. Hit the sandy shores across three of our favourite Gold Coast beaches – Broadbeach, North Kirra and Kurrawa – as over 6,000 competitors take on the elements and each other to compete across eight exhilarating days and 480 beach and ocean events. Pack the umbrellas and slap on that 50+ sunscreen before taking a front row seat at one of Australia’s favourite ocean-side events.
GOLD COAST FILM FESTIVAL
When: 20 April – 1 May, 2022 Where: Various locations across the Gold Coast
Lights, camera, action – now in its 20th year, the much-loved and lauded Gold Coast Film Festival kicks off its showreel of events, workshops, panels and over 100 films collected from all over the world to delight audiences over 12 spectacular days in April. Genres range from heart-racing dramas, to spine tingling thrillers, sci-fi, action and laugh-along comedies. All alongside internationally acclaimed foreign-language films, local and international documentaries, plus small budget indie films all vying to make it on your binge list.
Over the April school holidays, younger film buffs can enjoy special “YScreen” sessions featuring family-friendly films, while event partner Pacific Fair will host free kids’ cinematic workshops aimed at introducing kids to the behind-the-scenes world of film, alongside a pop-up cinema under the stars for families to feast on films in the Pacific Fair Resort.
DREAMWORLD STREET FOOD FESTIVAL
When: 2 – 18 April, 2022 Where: Dreamworld
Bring your taste buds along for the ride at Dreamworld these school holidays, to their first street food festival. With over 100 food and beverage items making up a multicultural menu, served from a fleet of food trucks alongside the park’s favourite eateries, patrons will be tempted to taste their way around the world. For those who can’t quite decide which food is their favourite, a Tasting Trail will offer a tempting range of sample-sized eats. Feel free to forage with regular Dreamworld entry that still includes your favourite rides and wildlife attractions. Food and beverage will need to be purchased separately, however this new twist on theme park food is sure to please all appetites. *Accessible with regular theme park entry.
KIDS TAKE OVER AT HOTA
When: 1-8 April, 2022 Where: HOTA (Home of the Arts)
Back by popular demand, HOTA’s annual festival for creative kids returns this month, encouraging youngsters to Take Over at HOTA by dancing to the beat of their own drum. Designed to inspire curious littles to let loose, the program is sprinkled with activities aligned with creation, learning and connection. Kids can engage in performance, art and music as it weaves through the week-long program that is action-packed with plays, tours of the gallery, workshops, exhibitions and all sorts of fun both inside and out. Dining is also mini sized, with a menu designed especially with kids in mind.
